Our hand push lawnmower and me don’t like grass! Actually I do like grass... it’s lawns that I don’t like. Grass is very interesting and if you let it grow you’ll be surprised how diverse it can be. Let a bit of your lawn grow and see what happens. I don’t mean for a couple of weeks in the summer... I mean for a couple of years! You’ll be amazed at what will grow and who will come and visit your wild patch. And by that I don’t mean Poldark with his scythe, I’m talking about butterflies, moths, all sorts of insects, spiders and birds.
Anyway, the lawnmower and me took a visit to the recycling centre this week and only one of us came back! We’re not buying a new one... we’re getting rid of the lawn! Just flower beds, a nice limestone chippings path and of course a wild area for all to enjoy including our Strider.
The back garden is still work in progress but the front garden is finished and is starting to flourish into a mature garden. Smeagol’s acer is still in its pot at the front but will find a permanent home round the back once the leaves drop later this year.
Then the Queen left off, quite out of breath, and said to Alice, “Have you seen the Mock Turtle yet?”
“No,'”said Alice. “I don't even know what a Mock Turtle is.”
“It's the thing Mock Turtle Soup is made from,” said the Queen.
“I never saw one, or heard of one,” said Alice.
“Come on, then,” said the Queen, “and he shall tell you his history,”
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll.

super photos Sarah certainly knows how to create a garden!...good idea to let the grass grow..i have spent a few hours today with the strimmer and mower ..do you have any hedgehogs?..ours have long gone..last one I saw was dead in the pond!..we have some goldcrests ..I hear them first..then locate them
ReplyDeleteI've not seen hedgehogs for years but they are around as Sarah has seen them in a local garden she works in. We had one in Horbury. Two years ago, we spotted a goldcrest on Grange-over-Sands Prom.... Sarah mentioned it here!
ReplyDeleteWow Sarah ... do you ever stop! Have you ever heard of a 'tea break' ?;). But your work is paying off as the garden is looking incredible. So I'm guessing you must be pleased that the only 'one to come back' wasn't the lawnmower!!
ReplyDeleteSmeagol's acer is looking wonderful.
I remember your garden having a walnut tree Rob - is it still there? And your huge pond. Our garden is wild too, still have the pond but no longer any fish. All the frogspawn this year just died ... too much duckweed I think.
And Yaay - I know the answer! The younger brother of Brandan Coogan, (lead singer of Mock Turtles) is ........drum roll pleeease.........STEVE COOGAN!!!!! (And Google didn't play any part in me finding the answer, no nothing whatsoever, nothing at all.!!!! ;) x
Soooooo close Anne but not close enough! Steve is older than BrEndan and Martin is older than both and was lead singer of the Mock Turtles!
