Well I never

Today
Our two swallows worked very hard at building their nest but unfortunately a lot of it was ending up on the floor. It was impossible to know if our swallows were experienced nest builders or if they were first timers! When we moved here in 2013 there was an old nest in the porch and although we asked the painters to leave it in place, it disappeared. Swallows and their offspring do come back to nest sites when they return from Africa so it was possible this was a young pair who could have been raised here. But all that effort in collecting mud and straw for it to end up on the floor. What should I do.....

It’s very quiet here today, the Church bells have stopped ringing, Sarah has gone to visit her Mum this weekend, Strider is fast asleep in the front room. Outside the wind is rustling the trees and the large white and grey clouds are moving quickly towards The Bay. Insects are being blown about in the skies... can they really fly where they want or do they just go where the wind takes them?

Looking up at the inside of our porch all I can see is an empty nest. But if I look towards the sky it is far from quiet and empty up there. Insects are being ruthlessly hunted and they have nowhere to run (fly)! Swifts, swallows and house martins effortlessly pluck them from the air with their amazing agility, speed and super eyesight. If I had super Hirundinidae eyesight then I may just be able to recognise seven of those swallows. If they’re looking down on me, as I look up at them, then they will certainly know my face...

  1. I just love reading your blogs Dave - I feel I'm always 'right there' in the middle of everything as they're so descriptive! I've literally felt like shaking my head to ward off any flying insects, and at the same time thinking "I'M FLYING'!!!! X
