Over Sands

We’re doing another cross bay walk with our friends Katie & John tomorrow. The bay being Morecambe Bay... renowned for its dangerous sea currents, fast rising tides and of course the notorious quicksand! A treacherous place to be indeed... just as well we are being led by Cedric Robinson MBE, the Queen’s Guide to the Sands.

Cedric has been safely guiding folk across the bay for many years and lives in a cottage in Grange-over-Sands owned by the Crown (no, not the pub!). He isn’t duty-bound to guide any public walks but is contracted to guide the Queen and people nominated by the Queen. Most of the public walks led by Cedric are charity fund-raising events. Our walk will be with a few hundred other bay walkers and we’ll cover eight miles in about three hours. There is no fixed route across the bay, the moving channels determine the course which will be different on every crossing. The walk starts in Arnside and finishes at Kents Bank train station. If you were to walk in a straight line the distance would be four miles, so that gives you an idea of the meandering eight mile route that is needed to cross safely!

Our walk starts at 10.30am with the low tide at 11.30 and high tide at 5pm. I’ll post some photos from the walk tomorrow evening so you know we crossed safely!

All the swifts have left now with just the swallows and house martins dashing about in our skies. Will post an update on our own swallows soon.

In case we don't make it across here are our photos from last year...
