We’re getting a self-drive van tomorrow and moving all our furniture and belongings and the cat to Allithwaite! (and ourselves!)
When we were looking for somewhere to buy, (our first viewings were on my 50th birthday last year!) we saw plenty of places that didn't do anything for us although on paper (or should I say on the internet) they looked ideal and worth a visit. The whole process was very disheartening. We then got a call from the estate agent to say a property had just come on the market and was just what we were looking for. After reading the details we were very keen and booked a viewing for first thing in the morning. Walking through the front door we both knew it was the one for us and we were so excited that we hardly noticed the woman pushing past us on her way out! As soon as we got back home we phoned the estate agents to put in an offer only to be told an offer had already been accepted from the woman who pushed past us!
We were very disappointed and didn’t talk or think about houses for the next few days. Then the phone rang again and, for what ever reason, the offer had been withdrawn and so we offered the full asking price without hesitation!
The house was on the market for a very good price as it needed some work. It had been lived in for many years by an elderly lady and when she left it was sold to the chap we bought it from. He made a good start on modernising the house but sold it to us unfinished which was ideal for us because of the price and it meant we could finish it how we wanted.
Gutters, drainpipes, dust, windows, bricks, builders, dust, doors, joiners, dust, rubble, paint, roof slate, plaster, gas pipes and electric wires, keeping the neighbours happy and more dust & rubble is how I will remember the summer of 2013!! How I will remember the autumn of this year will be moving into our new house and no longer being trapped in the landlord & tenant game. Owner occupier city here we come!
Amongst the many reasons why we both fell for this house is the extra storey at the back. From the kitchen there is a flight of stairs that lead down to what we are calling the garden room and it leads out into the...... garden! Originally there was also an external flight of stairs and a doorway which has now been replaced (we think in the 1960s) by a bay window, which we really like. The external stairs were left in place but we have had them removed to create more space outside.
With the kitchen being on the second floor, relative to the back of the house, it means washing the dishes comes with a view!
